In summer most of us find it hard to resist the temptations of the barbecue. Right across Scotland, as the weather heats up, in both cities and suburbs the tantalising smell of smouldering charcoal and sizzling meat becomes both ubiquitous and irresistible. However, barbecues are not without their dangers, and every year there are hundreds of accidents in Scotland which involve them.
Indeed, the most recent available statistics indicate that, in the UK each year, around 1,800 people suffer burns, scalds or cut injuries as a result of a barbecue-related accident.
In 2010, a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents spokesperson warned, "With the weather forecast looking fantastic, many people will be getting the barbecue out so it's important to remember a few basic safety precautions, and plan your barbecue well, so that everyone can have fun without any trips to A&E. With the good weather set to continue throughout the summer, taking care with barbecues will mean that everyone stays safe to enjoy it.
Just as in wider Britain, where 1,400 barbecue-related injuries are suffered at home, compared to 400 in public places, the majority of barbecue accidents in Scotland occur in private residences.
In fact, such incidents can sometimes even prove fatal. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common cause of fatal barbecue accidents. This is because barbecues can emit high levels of the deadly gas, which, in an open, ventilated space should not be a problem, but in a confined unventilated space can result in death.
For example, in 2010 it was reported that during a camping trip a man died after trying to keep his car warm on a cold night by putting a barbecue in the vehicle. The next morning he was found slumped over his steering wheel, having succumbed to the effects of poisonous gases.
However, in this case it was purely the man's own negligence that led to his death, so there would be no chance of his family claiming compensation. But, in some cases, for example, if a person has suffered a barbecue-related injury at a public event in Scotland, it may be possible to prove that another party's negligence caused the incident and, as such, launch a successful Scottish accident claim.
