Scottish accident claims - Hundreds of children end up in hospital

Many children as young as eight years old could well have been involved in a personal injury-type Scottish accident, claimed a 2008 health study.

The report from NHS Quality Improvement Scotland has found accident and emergency hospitals in the country have to treat many youths for accidents, assaults and alcohol and drugs-related incidents.

Notably, about 50 per cent of the youngsters monitored in the report had been attacked or been involved in an accident, while some 42 per cent were, simply, very drunk.

Over six weeks, about 650 young people up to age 17 were admitted to A&E, many close to choking to death on their own sick, said the study.

It is a shocking finding that the government and child welfare groups - are considering to try to tackle Scotland's alcohol-linked malaise, it has been reported.

Some young people who were drinking alcohol about two per cent ended up back in hospital more than once, according to the study.

Worryingly, children drank an amount equal to six pints of beer (13 units) on average. Some had to be referred for mental health treatment although most young people left A&E in under four hours.
