With its rural beauty, Scotland offers a plethora of outdoor pursuits to the adrenaline junkie from rock climbing to horse riding. Unfortunately, accidents in Scotland do happen and can result in personal injuries and accident compensation claims which can spoil what should be an enjoyable experience.
Horse riding is a brilliant way to really appreciate the wonderful landscape around Scotland. From gallops along the beaches to treks through the forests and rides along the moors, Scotland is perhaps best appreciated from horseback. With plenty of stables in Scotland offering rides for everybody from the complete beginner to the more experienced rider, thousands of people ride in Scotland every year.
Unfortunately this leads to hundreds of horse accidents every year, some of which result in serious personal injury. Due to the unpredictable nature of horses, this can happen to experienced riders and complete beginners alike. Riding stables have a duty of care to all of their riders to ensure that the risk of a riding accident is kept to a minimum and adequate protection is worn to reduce the chance of personal injury.
Most riding stables provide their clients with riding helmets. However, these can often be of an inadequate safety standard and of the wrong fit leading to insufficient protection from head injuries. All riding hats provided by riding stables must conform to the current British Standard riding hat safety level and should have a kitemark to prove it which will be printed on the inside of the hat. After a fall, a riding hat becomes obsolete regardless of whether any cracks are noticeable. However, at a riding stable it is impossible to know if the hat you borrow has been in multiple accidents or none at all so it is always worth bringing your own.
Faulty horse tack can also be a hazard at an unknown riding stable. The last thing needed when you're on an unknown horse is for your reins to snap or your girth to break. However incidents of faulty horse tack and protective riding gear are not unheard of and so riders must be cautious when choosing a riding stables or trekking centre.
Riding stables are responsible for ensuring that risks are kept to a minimum. Riders should be matched to horses that are suitable for their level of experience so that they are not put on a horse that they will not be able to handle. Choosing a yard with British Horse Society (BHS), approval can ensure that you find stables where excellent safety standards are met. Gaining the BHS approval involves rigorous safety inspections and thorough staff training, so safety standards at these yards are likely to be much higher.
