Using partnerships to prevent accidents at work

Eradicating the problems of accidents at work must surely begin by educating the workers of tomorrow about the risks they will face once they eventually become members of the UK workforce.

Not only does such education have a lasting impact throughout a worker's life, but it is also of invaluable assistance in protecting these workers from workplace accidents at the time they are most vulnerable to occupational hazards: the early years of their careers.

This is why partnerships between training establishments and health and safety organisations are so warmly welcomed. One such partnership is that which exists between Stephenson College and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Stephenson College is the largest provider of work based training and apprenticeships in the East Midlands, while the IOSH is widely-regarded as the leading health and safety body in Europe, meaning the partnership has the potential to effect real and lasting change.

Most recently, as part of the scheme, IOSH allowed Stephenson College to use resources from its Workplace Hazard Awareness Course to educate new students about the risks they will be facing in both their training and future working lives.

IOSH president Natasha Freeman commented on the accident and work prevention drive, "Our whole learning process is based largely on assessing risk, allowing us to carry out risky activities by reducing the harm to us and others so we can enjoy them. Work is a new environment for young people, so introducing the perception of what risk means in the workplace is arming young people to make decisions that remove harm but not enjoyment.

"Our free Workplace Hazard Awareness Course (WHAC) encourages young people to recognise and manage risk, not avoid it. It's great to see Stephenson College using WHAC to introduce their new students to health and safety. The facilities on site will make this event a memorable hands-on experience for all the new learners."

The principal of Stephenson College spoke of what the partnership means to his training establishment, "The transition from school to college is an exciting and challenging time for young people. Through the innovative and interesting programmes our staff have created, based on an essential element of vocational training and health and safety, we hope to introduce our new students to the ways in which they will be expected to work at Stephenson College and to enjoy the college atmosphere as soon as possible.

"We are delighted to be working in partnership with IOSH to raise the awareness and importance that health and safety plays at both college and in life."
