In June 2010, it was widely reported that a study found drivers and car passengers had a greater likelihood of being involved in an accident in Scotland than anywhere else in the UK as Scottish roads had the highest average accident rating in the UK.
The Road Safety Foundation had analysed 28,000 miles of Great British roads and revealed that Scotland had the highest proportion of either high or medium-risk highways at 12%.
The UK figure was 10%.
Accidents in Scotland accounted for one in nine fatal car crashes in the UK with the proportion of head-on collisions or incidents where cars leave the road far outweighing the number of accidents at junctions. In the UK as a whole, junction accidents were the cause of one third of all fatalities and serious car crashes.
Director of the Road Safety Foundation, Dr Joanne Hill, said, "As the road budget becomes tighter, emphasis must be on saving lives with less. It means systematic attention to detail, prioritising treatment of the highest-risk routes most likely to benefit from low-cost, high-return countermeasures.
According to the charity, it was the geographical locations of many Scottish roads which led to their high accident rates: the connection of sparsely populated areas and carrying more long-distance or recreational travelers was the reason given for the increased incidence of head-on crashes.
Car accidents in Scotland were also said to be caused by the high number of single track roads in the nation. Almost 88% of the road system north of the border is single carriageway roads.
However, according to the Herald Scotland, road accident figures published the week previously had revealed that fatalities as a result of Scottish road traffic accidents had fallen to their lowest level in 60 years.
