Inductions can help avoid an accident at work

In 2010 it was announced by the Health and Safety Executive that the fatal accident at work rate in Scotland for 2009-10 had fallen by more than 50 percent on 2008-09's level.

Despite the fact that the Scottish workplace fatality figures had fallen from 49 in 2008-09 to 23 in 2009-10, it remained clear that much work was still needed to improve occupational safety, particularly in the agricultural and construction industries, which accounted for the majority of deaths.

The HSE's director in Scotland echoed the sentiments of families, workers, union officials and no win, no fee lawyers when he said, "While it's heartening to see a continued reduction in the number of work-related deaths in Scotland, it's simply not good enough that 23 people failed to come home from work to their families last year.

He reserved especial criticism for agriculture, calling it "the most dangerous industry in which to earn a living, and we all must work hard to tackle the poor safety record in this sector."

And he was also critical of employers for failing to address basic safety practices which, had they been taken, could have avoided many "avoidable" accidents.

At around the same time the improved fatal Scottish accident figures were released this failure to ensure basic safety procedures also came to the attention of health and safety officials when a leading personal injury claims company disclosed the results of a survey which showed that 35% of people claimed to have received no health and safety induction.

This led the Red Cross to comment, "New employees can be a vulnerable group as they are unfamiliar with the environment and new procedures. Information about the arrangements for first aid is vitally important for all new employees but particularly important for those who are working in higher risk environments or people who may be using machinery."
