Why is September so bad for forklift truck accidents?

Of all the months of the year, September is, for some reason, the one in which most forklift truck accidents occur - by quite a wide margin. And nobody appears to know why this is.

One firm of personal injury specialists suggested that this might be the result of returning from holiday without full attention being given to the work in hand. This is one of a number of guesses given by people with connections to the industry, but it may well be true that the most honest response is that of the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA), whose chairman simply said "We're not sure why September is the deadliest month."

He added that "lorry and van drivers are often the 'pedestrians' that get injured by forklifts", introducing the inaugural Forklift Safety Week, which was held in September 2008. It is, perhaps, as a result of these work accident statistics that the FLTA chose this month, with plans to make it an annual event.

The statistics indicate that, usually, a case of fatal personal injury relating to a forklift accident occurs once every six weeks. During Septembers, a death has been expected fortnightly, and those responsible for the Safety Week have hoped publicly that there will be no fatal forklift injury cases while the event is ongoing.

This is, of course, to include pedestrians and employees in addition to the drivers of the lifting machines.
