For some holidaymakers, nothing compares to a caravan holiday: the freedom of movement, the joys of the open road and the comfort and convenience of your own home away from home. However, caravanning is not without its risks and may in some circumstances result in an accident abroad.
Perhaps the first step, aside from ensuring basic safety maintenance such as correct tyre pressure, healthy engine function and the wearing of seatbelts in the tow-car, is for caravan holidaymakers to ensure that they familiarise themselves with the driving laws and regulations of the country and, sometimes, countries they are visiting.
Indeed, the Travel Association (ABTA), which represents some 5000 travel agencies and 900 tour operators across the United Kingdom, recommends that those driving abroad, whether they're travelling with a caravan or otherwise, are thoroughly prepared for the vagaries of driving in another country.
A spokesperson from the organisation comments, "Although statistically the chances of being caught in a road accident whilst on holiday abroad are small, accidents can and do occur."
And, despite this statistical risk being small, it is worth bearing in mind that in some European countries, road accidents account for as many as 10% of all accident deaths. Of these deaths, some 25,000 involve tourists suffering an accident abroad while on the road.
And although some caravan holidaymakers will be travelling as part of a tour operator organized holiday, the majority will not; as such, it is vital that they are prepared to do all the groundwork, research and maintenance themselves.
A spokesperson from The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile comments, "Tourists and international travellers expect and demand the highest standards of safety when they step on an aeroplane to travel on holiday. But once they leave the arrivals lounge, tourists are left to fend for themselves in an often dangerous environment."
Claim compensation for an accident suffered abroad
There are laws in place, internationally, in Europe and here in the UK, to ensure that holidaymakers who suffer an accident abroad have recourse to claiming compensation for their injuries, where appropriate.
The no win, no fee solicitors on our panel of specialists work to maximize the compensation settlements of people who have suffered injury in these circumstances.
However, no two claims are ever the same: some involve those who have been injured while working abroad, others who have suffered injury in a foreign road accident and others who have sustained an injury in some form of tour operator organized activity. Food poisoning-related illnesses are another common type of litigable circumstance.
To find out if your injury may be considered compensable, it is worth discussing your situation with a legal advisor.
Here at YouClaim, our legal advisors provide legal advice without obligation and in complete confidence.
