With forklift truck accidents comprising almost a quarter of all workplace transport accidents it is not surprising that the Fork Lift Truck Association was set up, by companies involved in the manufacture and use of the vehicles, to act as a central resource for information and advice on all aspects of using lift trucks and materials handling issues.
As the most representative body of its kind in Europe the FLTA exists to maintain and raise standards in the industry, both to protect the interests of consumers, and to improve safety and productivity wherever they are used.
Its members come from all aspects of the industry, including manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers and suppliers of accessories and services. All must agree to meet certain standards and abide by a code of practice.
The association's safe user group is aimed specifically at owners and drivers of fork lift trucks and each year in September the FTLA organises a safety week to highlight best practices to avoid casualties.
The rate of worker deaths and injuries doubles in September because of the build-up to Christmas when more temporary staff are employed to handle extra stock for retailers.
FLTA chief executive David Ellison believes much of the problem regarding fork lift truck safety lies with managers and supervisors. "All too often, the people responsible for enforcing good practice are poorly equipped for the task," he explains.
"It's not unusual for managers and supervisors to have had no formal training in fork lift truck safety, and have too little time to do the research. As a result, these men and women charged with looking after our workplaces are often not able to recognise risks when they see them and take action before problems occur."
The FTLA has a variety of publications and information on its website to help managers and supervisors avoid workplace accidents involving lifting trucks which lead to 43 deaths and injuries every week.
