RSI stands for repetitive strain injury but is known by many different names which may create confusion for individuals reading about their symptoms before making an RSI claim.
Repetitive stress injury, repetitive motion injuries, repetitive motion disorder, cumulative trauma disorder, occupational overuse syndrome and regional musculoskeletal disorder can all be interpreted as the same thing – pain occurring in a joint after repeating a certain movement too frequently.
Different types of repetitive strain injury affect different parts of the body. Depending on the build and age of an individual and what job they are employed in, the parts of their joints which become strained will vary.
Ligaments are one part of a person's body which are prone to becoming strained by repetitive movements, although overuse injuries to ligaments are less common than they are for other parts of a joint.
Ligaments
Unlike tendons and muscles which work to move an individual's limbs, ligaments are fibrous connective tissues which help to strengthen a bone joint and make sure that it moves in the right way. All joints, such as knees or shoulders, are surrounded by ligaments which keep them in place.
Ligaments, which are all made of parallel collagen fibers, are slightly elastic so that during movement joints can shift position but the ligaments can regain their original shape when the joint is at rest.
However, this elasticity may become worn out through constant movement and cause a person pain and discomfort.
Employers whose workers undertake tasks which utilise the same joint movements frequently, should make sure that those individuals get enough rest breaks, or are timetabled to change roles often enough that no joint becomes overused by performing the same activity.
It is an employer's responsibility to look after the welfare of their staff. If an individual suffers RSI through neglect towards their health, which is not their fault, they may be able to make a compensation claim for work-related personal injury.
