Up until the 1970s many industries used asbestos extensively, believing it to be a wonder material and many employees worked with it unknowing of the risks. For those people, living with the prospect of developing asbestos cancer is a daily reality.
Imagine if you were told that you and your family should make your home on the site of an ex-asbestos plant. Would you sleep well at night?
In the19th century Rochdale was home to one of the largest asbestos factories in the world; employing thousands of local people who were unaware of the risks related to inhaling the lethal asbestos dust.
In the 21st century campaigners have highlighted the dangers of the site and the inherent issues surrounding the building of homes on what could well be asbestos contaminated soil.
The campaign website highlights the company's long and controversial history, detailing its handling of asbestos and asbestos related cancer claims. From the early 1900's the company is alleged to have resisted government advice on health-protection and regulations and a web of lies and deceit regarding asbestosis is believed to have been woven by company men.
In 1972, an asbestosis report was published by a US doctor regarding the Rochdale company's flagship plant. He revealed the prevalence of asbestosis was 10 times higher than had been previously reported five years earlier by a doctor on the company payroll.
Records show that asbestos was processed on the site for over 100 years and company documents from 1957 record 300 tonnes of asbestos dust a year were dumped on site.
Campaigners have been working since 2004 to prevent a planning application for development of 600 homes and a children's nursery on the site of the asbestos factory. They fear disturbing soil on the site would could release tonnes of dormant asbestos fibres into the atmosphere, with the potential to trigger a large number of future asbestos cases in workers, nearby householders and future householders on the developed site.
