Risk assessments can prevent a factory accident

Welding in factoryFactories provide thousands of jobs and produce everything from cakes to vehicles, however, if they are not run properly, and employers do not carry out their duty to protect workers, employees are at risk of sustaining an industrial injury.

Every business is different and the risks facing a firm should be assessed on an individual basis. In order for a risk assessment to be effective in protecting workers, an employer needs to consider the hazards and controls required in the workplace.

Carrying out a factory risk assessment

In many factories, the risks of any roles are well known and it is simple to apply the appropriate control measures to prevent a worker from sustaining an injury. The first step of any risk assessment is to establish any potential hazards which can include chemicals, working from ladders and working with or near electricity.

After an assessor has taken note of any hazards, they should then consider who could be harmed from the risk and how an incident could happen.

Next, it is important to consider the extent of the risks presented to staff and decide upon the precautions required to protect staff appropriately from an accident.

Once these steps have been carried out, the employer should ensure that any precautions have been implemented, such as fitting safety guards or providing staff with protective clothing, and they should then proceed to record their findings.

Factories frequently update equipment, and it is not uncommon for other pieces of machinery and equipment to become worn and more dangerous to workers, so employers should remember to review a risk assessment and update it if necessary.

In small organisations an employer may feel confident enough to carry out a risk assessment themselves, however, in larger organisations employers often feel more comfortable asking a trained health and safety advisor to help.
