In the UK each week, around 43 people suffer personal injury as a result of accidents involving fork lift trucks; almost as many people as are injured in work accidents caused by vans, cars and HGVs combined.
It is a truly shocking work accident statistic and is unquestionably one that needs to be addressed, particularly as an unacceptably high number of such incidents result in catastrophic injury or death.
A relatively high number of these fork lift truck accidents are caused by incidents in which a pedestrian or other worker has suffered personal injury as a result of a fork lift reversing.
One way to reduce these types of accident is to fit forklifts with reversing alarms in order to notify those around of the risk – however, such an approach is not suitable in all cases, particularly as the alarms may be too loud for the drivers, and there are other methods of alerting bystanders and surrounding workers to the dangers of a reversing fork lift.
Indeed, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has examined the use of radar and other proximity sensing devices as another method for preventing these reversing-related accidents. And although the organisation accepts that sensing systems may have a role to play on some open sites, they, too, are not always the solution of best fit. In the opinion of many workplace safety experts, sensing systems are better suited to more general road situations, where their range (typically around two metres) is more effective in preventing accidents.
In many cases there is still no substitute for conventional wing mirrors, which can be enhanced with added convex mirrors to increase the scope of visibility. However, even with such specialised mirrors, blind-spots may still exist.
In a large number of situations, CCTV will be the best solution, as it can both eliminate the blind-spots and provide operators with ample warning time. Indeed, studies show that CCTV often has a significant impact in reducing the number of reversing incidents.
