Undertaking more than one mesothelioma treatment may lengthen life

For anyone who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma and received compensation from their employer or other person deemed responsible for the contraction of the asbestos-related disease, it is unfortunate that no amount of money is likely to provide better medical treatment or ensure a longer life.

Medical knowledge and practice of treating the condition is improving slowly. A study published in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery in the summer of 2010, examined the survival rates of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma and compared four types of treatment.

The four groups of patients were recorded with increasing levels of medical intervention, including (A) no surgery, (B) thoracotomy but no resection, (C) resection but no adjuvant treatment, and (D) resection as part of multimodality treatment.

An average survival time for each of these groups was estimated. Patients who did not have surgery survived 16.8 months while those who underwent a thoracotomy (a surgical incision in the chest wall) had a mean survival of 17.8 months.

The third group was treated by the removal of the tumour or damaged part of the lung without extra drug therapy using an adjuvant and their average survival rate was 17 months.

The highest rate of survival was for those who received more than one type of treatment, including surgery, and these people, on average, survived for nearly 33 months from diagnosis.

However, researchers urged caution when interpreting the statistics saying that survival rates were at the most optimistic end of the scale and that there was a high risk of death when operations were undertaken. All medical factors had to be taken into consideration when comparing the results.

Because mesothelioma is almost always fatal, it is important for anyone who has contracted this work-related condition, or a loved one who can act on their behalf, to act quickly in obtaining justified compensation to help mitigate the effects of the illness and provide as much comfort as possible to the victim.
