WHO report shows psychological issues may feature in a holiday claim

Most people, when imagining a holiday claim, will picture some form of personal injury that is physical - a broken leg, perhaps, or food poisoning - but, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a psychiatric emergency can also be a "leading cause of ill-health among travellers".

This information arose in a 2009 report that showed that a psychiatric emergency is one of the most frequently cited reasons for evacuation by air ambulance, alongside personal injury and heart disease. As many as 100 patients a week may return to the UK by air ambulance, says the WHO report, and many more may return on commercial flights with medical accompaniment.

One family was reported by the Independent to have been faced with a £25,000 bill after a sufferer from bipolar disorder became manic while holidaying in Egypt without travel insurance.

For a holiday accident claim to be successful, however, an element of liability must be shown to belong to one of the parties responsible for your holiday. This can be a complex area for personal injury solicitors to explore, but if a person who has survived a psychiatric emergency on holiday feels that any costs or damages are another party's fault, the exploration of this complex area of personal injury law may well be worth the effort.

The WHO report includes advice to medical professionals - who are advised to check for psychological health during consultations for vaccinations before travel - and for plane companies, who are advised that those people with a severe phobia of flying may feel more comfortable in an aisle seat. The full report is available here.
