In 2010 it emerged that there may be problems with one of the world's great supercars. The Ferrari 458 a 200 mph vehicle capable of accelerating from 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, once hailed by Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson as "one of the all-time greats", seemed to be involved in a disproportionate number of car accidents, with a large number just bursting into flames. Inevitably, the world's product liability claim solicitors sat up, took notice and began to ask questions.
The possible problems came to light after a website which monitors crashes involving supercars reported an unusually high number of incidents involving the Ferrari 458. A spokesperson from the website commented, "I knew there would be crashes but I didn't expect there to be so many so soon. It's not uncommon for new exotic models to start off with a few crashes."
Soon afterwards, news outlets were flooded with pictures of flame-wracked 458s, with most complete write-offs after suddenly and unexpectedly erupting into flames; one picture was of a 458 burnt to nothing but a hunk of melted metal.
Although none of the drivers had suffered serious personal injury in the incidents, meaning no product liability claims were necessary, a number were understood to be near-misses.
Naturally, as the incidents involved such a luxury flagship brand, Ferrari tried quickly to react appropriately. A spokesperson from the company said, "Ferrari takes any incident involving one of our vehicles very seriously. The company is currently investigating the particular incidents in which vehicles have apparently been involved in a vehicle fire, and it is currently treating these as separate incidents."
A specialist from YouClaim's defective product compensation panel comments, "Although early indications suggested that contrary to the instinct of many consumers there were no problems with the Ferraris, the unsettling number of fires involving the 458 certainly put the company's damage control PR experts into overdrive.
"This is typical of most product scares, of course, problems only arise when the intensity of a PR exercise is not matched with careful and thorough safety investigations."
