In an increasingly global world where a growing number of products are sold not just in one, two or three countries but in many countries and continents across the planet, it is becoming common for a product liability claim in one country to prompt a product recall in another.
With this in mind the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has sought to enhance consumer safety by developing a special Working Group on Consumer Safety to implement a ten-point action plan.
Inclusive of both OECD member states and non-OECD member states, the working group attempts to pool some of the world's top product safety experts to share information and bring about more globally cohesive product recall responses.
Michael Jenkin, Chairman of the OECD's Committee on Consumer Policy, comments, "A number of high profile recalls worldwide have focussed attention on safety problems and their global nature. The Committee on Consumer Policy reacted quickly, bringing key players to the table to explore the scope of the problem and ways to address concerns.
"We concluded that more openness in sharing information on unsafe products is much needed and that the OECD provided a good forum for advancing this work. The working group was created with this in mind."
The Working Group's ten-point action policy is made up of a three-stage strategy, incorporating short-term actions, medium-term actions and long-term actions.
A spokesperson from product liability claim expert YouClaim comments, "It is essential to recognise that in a global economy there needs to be strong cooperation and sharing of information about faulty and defective products.
"Doing so can only empower consumers, prevent personal injuries and help ensure that only safe products are sold on the shelves of the world's shops."
