Should golf clubs carry a health warning?

Modern golf is a hazardous pastime which can cause personal injury in the form of noise induced hearing loss - this may, in turn, see the instigation of a product liability claim.

If you think this sounds far-fetched, you might want to read on.

In early 2009, it was reported in the British Medical Journal that certain titanium drivers can cause a 'sonic boom' when the club face connects with the golf ball as the player tees off.

Tests conducted by specialists at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital revealed that a professional golfer, using a thin-faced club, consistently produced a noise in excess of 130 decibels when the ball was struck.

A lead researcher suggested that the noise caused by the titanium drivers may be sufficient to produce temporary or even permanent cochlear damage in susceptible individuals.

When the tests were reconstructed with similar sound emission rates at Florida's North Palm Beach Country Club, the Director of Golf said, "They design them to be louder, it's more exciting.

"If it sounds louder, it feels like it will go further."

Personal injury claim specialists feel that if it could be proved the sound levels from a golf club are enough to cause permanent hearing damage, then a personal injury claim could possibly be made.

Golf club manufacturers could perhaps mitigate the problem by issuing warning notices with their clubs and recommending the use of ear plugs when teeing off. This in turn could prevent product liability claims being made in respect of the damaging effects of their use.
