While the levels of cadmium in the Shrek glasses were not high enough to cause any acute symptoms of chemical poisoning, the concern was that long-term exposure to the carcinogen could lead to future health problems.
The restaurant urged customers to stop using the 16-ounce glasses which were available in four designs depicting the main characters from the animated film, Shrek Forever After.
Although the tumblers were only being sold in the U.S, because they are considered collectors items, the glasses were expected to appear on online auctioning sites.
The restaurant made a voluntary product recall in the U.S to prevent any incidents of personal injury to consumers and the threat of product liability compensation claims.
