Baby products and product liability claims

In 2009 a US company attempted to prevent a potentially catastrophic set of product liability claims after they discovered that a range of inflatable baby floats they were supplying to toy outlets were faulty.

The floats were marketed as a fun product for use in the water; there were many models, but each was based around the same principle – an inflatable ring with a plastic inner that had two holes in it for the baby's legs. So, the baby would sit in the water supported by the plastic seat and kept afloat by the inflatable ring.

However, it appears that a manufacturing process, or component quality control check, may have failed as some of the plastic seats ripped, thus presenting a drowning hazard as the baby could fall through into the water.

A comprehensive list of the affected products was listed on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website detailing approximately 4 million units that were considered to be at risk of causing a product liability claim.

Although no injuries had been reported, there had been 31 reports of tearing in the seats of the inflatables. The products had been manufactured in China and sold at high street retail outlets throughout America from December 2002 through to June 2009.
