Many parents of young children rely on the high chair as a safe place to put their children while they are unable to hold them. Unsurprisingly, parents do not expect to make a product liability claim for brand-new, shop-bought high chair as they trust it to be of a safe standard which, when used correctly, will not put their child in danger of a fall.
However, customers who bought the Leopard children's high chair from Ikea in 2009/10 were asked to return the seat and frame immediately after numerous reports of the chair breaking and causing harm to its users.
The furniture retail giant received eleven separate reports of broken snap locks on the product which were used to secure the seat to the frame. One incident left a child with bruising after the seat came apart from the frame causing the child to fall to the floor. However, the fall could also have caused injury to other parts of the body including the head which could have been potentially be life threatening.
There were also concerns that the broken snap lock could have become a choking hazard after one parent caught the piece in their child's mouth and thankfully managed to retrieve it before the child could choke on it.
Customers who had already bought the Leopard children's high chair were being urged to return the high chair immediately and return it to the Exchange and Returns department at any Ikea where they would receive a full refund.
The affected products included Leopard highchair seat with safety belt transparent grey, 501-614-58, Leopard highchair seat with safety belt red, 901-614-56, Leopard highchair seat with safety belt black, 701-614-57, Leopard highchair seat with safety belt white, 701-455-23, Leopard frame with tray black, 101-455-21and Leopard frame with tray white 201-573-54.
If customers, or their children, had incurred a personal injury through using the high chair, they would possibly be able to make a no win, no fee claim for their injuries.
