Product liability and the annoyance of a broken computer

Most people these days rely on their PC or laptop on a daily basis as a means to work, catch up on emails and as a resource for information. A faulty computer can therefore heavily affect a person's ability to carry out their daily routine. It could also have the potential to inflict a personal injury on the user either through an overheating battery or even through electrocution. In such a case a product liability claim should be made to gain compensation for any injuries the computer may have caused.

In 2010, Advent, a major manufacturer of laptops had to make a product recall for one of their laptops after it was found to be faulty. The battery on some models of the laptops was found to have failed and concerns were raised that they had the potential to inflict a personal injury. The company therefore made the decision to recall the batteries and replace them with new ones.

The computers themselves were unaffected by the fault and customers were able to continue using the notebooks while the batteries were being replaced by plugging them into the mains via the A/C cable.

In a statement released by the company they said, "Customer safety is always our priority and we have identified that some batteries do not meet our strict quality and safety standards."]

Not all models of Advent notebooks were affected by the product recall but customers were advised to check on the company's website or call a helpline to see if their laptop was one of the faulty models.

Manufacturers have a duty to ensure that the products they supply are safe to use and will not pose a threat of personal injury. The Trading Standards Institute has exacting standards which manufacturers must meet to ensure that goods do not infringe on the health and safety of consumers.

If you have suffered a personal injury due to product liability, you could be eligible to make a compensation claim for the faulty product.
