When you go to a holiday park you do so not only because of the ease and convenience but also because there is an assumption that the park owners will have ensured the safety of all guests; in short, because you do not have to worry about such planning interfering with the rest and relaxation of your holiday. However, when parks fail to ensure basic safety and guests suffer injury, a holiday claim may result.
This is why many holiday parks, including caravan parks, those which are self-catering and other, more up-market operators such as Centre Parcs, must employ risk management consultants to ensure that they are fully compliant with the relevant health and safety regulations, and, consequently, the vast majority do.
This is because, as well as the legal obligation to ensure safety, parks are aware that there are a wide array of potential health and safety hazards at a holiday park. These include slips and trips, vehicle collisions, bicycle accidents, defective and faulty equipment and food contamination-related issues; providing for customers' health, safety and happiness are an important component of a successful business model.
Of course, all family-oriented holiday parks will have areas, entertainment and attractions that are specifically designed for the use and enjoyment of children. As with all other areas of public liability, protecting children from personal injury is an essential component of a business's safety strategy. As such, play areas and equipment will come under at least as much scrutiny from risk assessment managers as any other aspect of a business.
And although a holiday park will strive to ensure safety in all aspects of its provision, it will also be asked to consider emergency procedures; for both the event of a sudden and unavoidable accident and for one that results from a negligent failure on the part of the operator.
Further to this, a holiday park must also have considerable public liability cover written into its business insurance policy.
