Although no right-minded person who goes on holiday expects to become embroiled in a holiday accident claim, it is generally accepted that if you suffer negligence or misfortune while holidaying at home or abroad it is likely that it will happen while on the road, in the air, at the hotel or while performing some kind of sport or leisure activity such as skiing or white water rafting.
However, although experience of travel injury solicitors confirms the view that the above are the most common types of claims, it is also true that real life can be fraught with unexpected events.
Whether it is a trip on the railway station concourse, being hit by a parasurfer as you bathe in the sea or being injured by a product from a tourist shop, it is likely that a similar accident has occurred before.
However, in 2010 a firm of no win, no fee solicitors received a holiday accident claim world-first when it was notified that a British woman had sustained a whiplash injury in an accident while aboard an aeroplane.
Although there was nothing unusual in that fact, close examination of the case revealed that she had suffered the injury as a result of the aircraft, which was on the runway of a Spanish airport, being hit by a bus.
The claimant recalled, "We had just boarded the plane and people were still taking their seats or putting bags in their overhead lockers when the whole plane shuddered and everyone was thrown to one side. People were clearly shaken and several were complaining of minor injuries."
And, in revealing that she was making a holiday accident claim over the incident, she added, "As a former tour operator representative, I sympathised with the position of the staff at the airport. But I am shocked at how little information we received.
"No medical assistance was available and one passenger reportedly had a fit after the accident."
A spokesperson from travel injury specialist YouClaim comments, "What this case illustrates is that accidents can happen anywhere if people are not careful in following full and sensible safety procedure.
"Although the idea of a plane colliding with a bus might seem slightly surreal at first, even funny, in truth it was fortunate that no person was more seriously injured."
