HSE pilot scheme to spot risk of work injury in Greater Manchester

In October 2008 reports in the press carried discouraging reports regarding the number of fatal work injury accidents that had occurred in the Greater Manchester area since 2003. Industrial accidents had claimed the lives of ten workers, and 39 businesses had been prosecuted for breaches in Health and Safety regulations.

A pilot scheme was initiated in an industrial business area known as Trafford Park, where health and safety officers targeted firms with spot checks hoping to identify and expose any potential hazards that could have fatal consequences.

Workplace accidents, on average, cause the deaths of 45 employees each year in the UK.

Approximately 4,000 workers, that's more than three a day, were injured during 2006 and 2007.

Falls from ladders cause 13 deaths a year, and a further 1,200 serious personal injuries. While 4,000 people die annually after suffering the effects of asbestos exposure in the workplace.

The Manchester pilot scheme aimed to give advice to local businesses on many Health and Safety Executive hot-topics such as, why it is important to replace damaged ladders and, how to carry out transport risk assessments.

Anne Gregory, of the HSE, said, "About a dozen inspectors from both the HSE and Trafford council will visit premises. Our hope is that we can prevent some of the serious and yet completely unnecessary incidents we investigate."

It was hoped that the scheme would continue further a field in an attempt to cut numbers of work injury accident claims nationwide.
