Zorbing accidents and how to claim

Zorb balling, or zorbing, is a popular adrenaline-filled experience which involves entering a large inflatable ball that is then usually rolled down a hill when the person is harnessed inside.

Most people's experiences are fun, albeit a little dizzying, but if health and safety precautions are not followed then this could result in a zorbing accident and a subsequent compensation claim having to be made.

For example an incident occurred in the Czech Republic in June 2009 where a pupil and teacher, most likely on a school trip, were involved in an accident which resulted in a fatality.

The two victims received some health and safety training before being allowed into the zorb ball, but as they rolled down the hill the net at the bottom of the planned course broke and they continued to fall down a steeper part of the incline.

The 47-year-old teacher suffered personal injuries severe enough that they died, and the 15-year-old pupil had to be taken to hospital.

The company should have taken precautions against such an event occurring by making sure that the net was fixed securely, and perhaps placing a second net behind the first one so that if the first one failed the second one would catch the zorb ball and stop it rolling any further down the hill.

All companies which include zorbing amongst its available activities should check that the land chosen is at not too steep an incline that the ball will pick up too much speed to be stopped safely, and make sure that they participants are correctly secured with the harnesses inside the inflatable.

There should be appropriate height, weight and age restrictions in place to avoid personal injury to customers.

Furthermore, companies might want to prohibit individuals suffering from high blood pressure or epilepsy, pregnant women, and those under the influence of alcohol or drugs from taking part in the activity. This may annoy potential customers, but it will prevent them from suffering injury exacerbated by their condition.
