Old buildings and staff safety

The most common cause of work accidents, and subsequent personal injury claims, are fall from height incidents, but many workers sustain injuries in different circumstances.

Another way in which employees occasionally get hurt in non-fault accidents is when they work in an old building which has not been surveyed recently enough and had become unsafe as a result.

It is negligent for a company to ignore the health and safety of the people they employ and if as a result of that negligence an employee sustains a personal injury, a firm may be found liable and have to pay the victim compensation.

Old buildings need to be looked after, other wise they may become run-down. This can result in plaster, brick, stone and wooden panelling or beams becoming unsecured and falling from their place.

Hopefully, debris will fall when there is no one around and will then be cleared and the hazardous area professionally repaired. However, if there happens to be a worker underneath as masonry or other parts of the building-work fall, they could be severely injured or even killed by the impact of the debris.

For this reason it is important that old buildings be surveyed at regular intervals throughout the year and that any dangerous building-work is mended or secured until such a time as it can be fixed, so that no preventable work accidents take place.

Making a building-work related claim

In whatever capacity you work, if you are employed in an old building and have sustained a personal injury due to falling building-work you could be eligible to claim compensation from your employer.

Companies have a duty of care towards members of staff. If you have suffered a non-fault accident in your workplace, your employer may be found liable.
