Millions hit by food poisoning, leading to personal injury claims

Some five million people are struck down each year by food poisoning in the UK and if you've been served unsafe food at a restaurant, caf or other eatery, you may want to contact a solicitor to make a food poisoning personal injury claim.

Rice and pasta are common causes of food poisoning in retail / commercial food premises. Sickness, pain and suffering can descend in hours or possibly days.

When these dodgy foods are not cooled quickly in a fridge, bacteria forms that can be heat-resistant, so cooking the food again, re-heating, will not destroy the bacteria.

Other sources of food poisoning that can lead to compensation claims are bad (unpasteurised) milk, eggs, poultry and red meat, soft cheeses and pat.

The most common dangerous bugs are campylobacter, next is salmonella, E Coli and listeria.

And there's a few myths worth debunking if you think food poisoning might not affect you:

1. Seafood is more prone to cause food illness
Not true. Prawns, fish, shellfish, winkles and so on get a bad name because they smell more than raw meat. That's the only reason for that poor reputation.

2. Mouldy marmalade, jam and cheese is ok to eat
Common sense needs to apply here if it wasn't meant to be covered in fur, then don't expect to stay well if you eat it. A little mould covering a top layer of jam could be safe if you slice off about one centimetre of the effected stuff.

3. Dropping food on floor and picking up in a flash
Forget this being ok. A fraction of a second is the briefest of flashes that it takes for bacteria to contaminate, say, a piece of toast landing butter-side down. Food picked up off the floor must not go into salad or dessert, else bugs grow to high, food poisoning levels rapidly.

So where possible, try to avoid food that could be unsafe. If you are struck down by food poisoning, consider a personal injury claim solicitors can be prepared to carry out no win, no fee compensation claim cases to fight for payouts.
