UK personal injury solicitors could be faced with record number of manhole cover claims

UK personal injury solicitors may well be bracing themselves for a spate of missing manhole cover-related accidents in 2008 after it has emerged that tightening economic pressures and the increased price of scrap metal have combined to make manhole cover theft a growing problem.

This could lead to UK personal injury solicitors receiving a variety of manhole cover-related accidents, as the thefts can lead to car crashes as well as cyclist and pedestrian injuries.

Local councils are needing to be increasingly vigilant in monitoring roads to ensure they spot missing covers early, as failure to quickly replace them could lead to the kinds of accidents that result in compensation claims.

Paul Bettison, Chairman of the Local Government Association's Environment Board, said: "It is disgusting that mindless thieves are stooping this low for scrap metal. This thoughtless criminal act is not only selfish but it could lead to serious accidents. With most of them striking at night, there is an increasing worry that pedestrians, cyclists and even cars may not see the approaching danger.

"Councils are working hard to replace covers, ensure safety and avoid blocked drains. If anyone witnesses suspicious behaviour, especially at night, they should contact the police or their local council immediately."

The thefts are a problem in Scotland too. Graham Mackenzie, Community Works Manager with Highland Council's TEC Services, explains, "The health and safety of the public are our main concern and a missing cover could cause serious injury to any road user including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. As soon as we were notified, the Council took immediate action to cone off the manholes where covers were stolen.

"The type of injury which could be sustained by either cyclists or pedestrians by falling into either a gully or manhole could lead to a fatality particularly where children are involved.

"The cost of replacement of the covers is significant and every pound spent on replacing stolen covers means a reduction in the amount of money we have available for normal maintenance. We urge anyone with any information to contact Northern Constabulary."
