Here at YouClaim, with our panel of experienced and skilled personal injury solicitors, we are accustomed to viewing acoustic shock as only a bad news story.
However, in 2010, Surgeons from University Frederico II in Naples, Italy, successfully trialled the use of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) therapy as a treatment for patients with single kidney stones of less than one-centimetre in size.
This particular form of therapy is particularly attractive to medical specialists because it is completely noninvasive, but instead sends an acoustic shock through the body to break up the kidney stone into tiny fragments which can then be passed painlessly through the urethra.
The treatment has a number of other benefits, not least its expediency – on average the treatment took around only 30 minutes to complete.
However, despite the ESWL therapy proving successful in 98% of all patients, it was not without complications. Unfortunately, 15% of the ESWL patients reported problems, with two-thirds of these believed to be kidney infections.
Following completion of the trial, the researchers stated, "These results clearly indicate that ESWL should be the first choice for patients with stones of one centimetre and under and ureteroscopy should be the first choice for patients exceeding one centimeter"
A spokesperson with workplace deafness compensation specialist YouClaim commented, "Acoustic shock is a very serious issue, affecting a variety of workers from industrial occupations as well as those who use telephone headsets, such as telesales operators.
"Although it is good to hear news of this successful treatment for kidney stones, we must not forget the plight of those UK workers who are left with hearing loss and hearing-related conditions such as tinnitus as a result of sudden noise and high intensity, high frequency noise."
