Typically people who suffer the symptoms of Raynauds disease will be adults who have developed their condition as a result of using excessively vibrating power tools.
However, for an unfortunate fraction of young children symptoms will develop for no apparent cause.
Although it is true that the condition is not rare among teenagers, who often develop symptoms around the time of puberty but have them disappear again in their early twenties, it is in young children that the condition can seem particularly worrying.
This is because young children are usually unable to articulate or understand their pain and the causes of their Raynaud's disease will not seem clear – after all, it is unlikely that they have been working with vibrating tools or using Raynaud's inducing chemicals.
The condition will also cause pain and distress in other ways. For example, young children suffering from the condition may find that pain in their extremities makes play difficult and interferes with school, nursery and sporting activities. To top this off, the condition can also be embarrassing and difficult to explain.
Specialist, Dr Thomas Lehman explains, "The most important thing for parents of children with primary Raynaud's is common sense. Keep their hands warm. Make them wear gloves. You want to make sure they pay attention to their fingers, but you don't want to make them "different from everyone else"
