All about perchlorate related illness

Perchlorate related illness can be varied but is thought to be particularly dangerous to women of childbearing age. Perchlolrates occur naturally in the environment and are also used within the manufacturing industry for the making of airbags, rocket fuel, fireworks and fertilisers.

The use of perchlorates at work can pose a significant risk to employees if they have not been issued with the necessary protective clothing or the necessary training to ensure that the chemical remains safely contained.

Perchlorates have been linked with several different adverse effects on people's health. Thyroid problems are the most noted health problem as perchlorate destroys the iodine ion from the protein that transports the ion to the thyroid. This can lead to iodine deficiency which in turn impairs thyroid development and is thought to be the main cause of learning difficulties in young children.

The Health and Safety Executive have detailed regulations in place which are designed to protect all workers from exposure to chemicals and other substances in the workplace. These are called "The Control of Substances hazardous to Health Regulations 1988" or COSHH for short.

Workers dealing with the chemical should be supplied with protective safety clothing including a mask and gloves to prevent ingestion of the chemical.

As well as posing a risk to workers, perchlorate related illnesses can also be suffered by the public should a spillage of the chemical be leaked into the local surroundings.

If you have suffered a perchlorate related illness, you may be eligible for making a perchlorate compensation claim.
