Swearing may ease personal injury pain, says research

According to research published in the UK journal NeuroReport in 2009, swearing can have a beneficial effect on those who suffer personal injury.

The research, undertaken by a team at Keele University's psychology department, showed that people swore while experiencing pain could withstand it for longer, and rated the pain as less serious, than those who were not allowed to do so.

The lead researcher speculated that, "it could be part of the flight or fight response. In the volunteers who swore, we also found they had an elevated heart rate, so it could be increasing their aggression levels. Increased aggression has been shown to reduce people's sensitivity to pain, so it could be swearing is helping this process."

The study involved 64 people who put their hand into iced water, and the measurement of how long they could stand the pain alongside a survey of the severity of the pain felt.

If these results are repeatable, the advice for anyone who suffers an accident injury may be that swearing is a viable method of lessening the pain experienced as a result of that accident. However, if that accident leaves the sufferer with lost income or other losses, it may be that a personal injury claim is a more valuable action to take - possibly in addition to the strong language.
