Up until the discovery of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) related illnesses and their subsequent ban in 1979, PCBs were hugely popular and used in hundreds of industrial and commercial applications. These included electrical, heat transfer, and hydraulic equipment, as plasticizers in paints, plastics, and rubber products: in pigments, dyes, and carbonless copy paper, as well as many other industrial applications.
PCBs belong to a family of man-made organic chemicals known as chlorinated hydrocarbons. PCBS were manufactured from 1929 until their ban in 1979 when the dangers of the chemicals were fully realised. They have a range of toxicity and vary in consistency from thin, light-coloured liquids to yellow or black waxy solids. They were popular due to their non-flammability, their chemical stability, high boiling point and electrical insulating properties.
Although their manufacturer is now banned, they may still be found in products and materials produced before the 1979 ban. Today PCBs may still be released into the environment from poorly maintained hazardous waste sites, illegal or improper dumping of PCB wastes, leaks or releases from electrical transformers containing PCBs and disposal of PCB containing products into landfills not designed to handle hazardous waste. Once leaked into the environment, PCBs do not easily break down meaning that they remain for long periods in the water cycle getting passed between soil, water and air.
This means that PCBs can be ingested by animals and fish as well as humans as they accumulate in crops or the water ingested by animals and people.
PCBs have been linked with cancer as well as a variety of other adverse effects on the immune system, reproductive system, nervous system and endocrine system.
