Health and safety regulations are your friends

People who look out for public safety are good guys. At YouClaim, if you have to make a compensation claim, your personal injury solicitor is probably going to become your best friend for a while, at least.

I recently had the unfortunate task of explaining to a group of elderly residents in a sheltered housing scheme why they could not put up last year's Christmas lights in the communal lounge.

The lights had failed the Portable Appliance Testing that had just taken place and it was one of my first duties as a temporary housing manager to have to explain the vagaries of Health and Safety regulations to a group of disgruntled pensioners who wanted to sing carols round a brightly lit tree.

I even went on to the RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) website and printed details of safe' lights that could be bought and put up. It was no use though; I had been branded a Scrooge' along with the bah-humbug' regulations I had quoted.

One bright spark even asked, "Can we bring down candles instead?"

I know they might have been joking with me, but they did appear to fail to see the reasoning behind why the lights could not be used.

A fire caused by faulty wiring of old lights would have been no laughing matter, and if one of the resident's grandchildren had received an electric shock from old style, high voltage lights that weren't double insulated, would they have been able to live their own thoughtlessness.
