Personal injury solicitors and misdiagnosed cancer

Losing a limb can be devastating for anyone but when it could have been prevented, coming to terms with the amputation can be particularly traumatic. While medical professionals generally do all they can to help prevent the loss of a limb, occasionally a patient's symptoms can be misdiagnosed leading to medical negligence cases and the involvement of personal injury solicitors.

In January 2010, a 15-year-old girl had to have her leg amputated after her GP routinely missed her cancer, passing her leg pain off as 'growing pains'. The teenager went to her doctor four times complaining of agonising pains in her right knee and shin that left her struggling to walk. However, her doctor diagnosed her as suffering from a condition called Osgood-Schlatter's disease which usually affects football playing teenage boys and she was recommended to go home and rest.

Despite resting and taking regular hot baths to try and ease the pain, the former cheerleader started having trouble walking and was taken to A&E by her mum who pretended that her daughter had fallen over to ensure that she got properly checked over.

A&E doctors immediately spotted the problem and diagnosed the girl with a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma. However, as the cancer was so far advanced chemotherapy did little to reduce the growth and the girl's leg had to be amputated.

Devastated at losing her leg, the girl criticised GPs for failing to take her complaint seriously and said she believe that if the cancer had been diagnosed sooner, surgeons could have removed the affected bone rather than her whole lower leg.

Speaking of the treatment she received by her local GP, the teenager said, "'If they had taken me more seriously then I might have been diagnosed sooner and things could have been different.'

Due to the medical negligence involved in the girl's case, she could seek the advice of a personal injury lawyer to make a compensation claim for the suffering she has endured.
