The Child Brain Injury Trust (CBIT) provides support to children, young people, families and professionals affected by childhood acquired brain injury, and in 2009, two personal injury lawyers from Trowbridge ran in the British 10K run in London to raise funds for the charity.
The pair, one a lofty 6ft 7inches tall and the other, a mere, 4ft 11 inches, took one hour to complete the course and raised £500 for the CBIT.
The personal injury lawyers told local press that a child acquires a brain injury in the UK every 30 minutes and that means around 20,000 children a year have their lives and those of their families changed forever as a result.
The CBIT was originally formed under the name of the Children's Head Injury Trust and the charity's original focus was on raising money for research into child head trauma, as well as offering support to families and providing information about head injuries.
However, gradually the emphasis of the work carried out by the trust changed and the provision of accessible literature for affected families began to take precedence over the funding of research into brain injury accidents.
In 2001 the trust formally became The Child Brain Injury Trust after rigorous re-evaluation of the charity's objectives. As more families of children with head injuries had become actively involved with the trust's work it was clear that the major role of family support was key, regardless of how the injury had occurred.
