According to a number of studies, people who work nightshifts may be more likely to need the services of a personal injury lawyer than regular, daylight, workers.
One such study was conducted by researchers at the renowned Canadian University of British Columbia.
It found that those working nightshifts had a nearly 100 percent greater chance of being injured on the job when compared to regular dayshift workers.
The study examined the details of 30,000 Canadians documented in Statistics Canada's Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics, and contrasted data describing the incidence of workers injured working nightshifts with the corresponding data for dayshift workers.
The researchers also sought to explain their findings in very human terms. "I think we can all relate to what it feels like to have a sleepless night. We feel a bit groggy the next day," said one.
She added. "Well, people who work shift work are constantly sleep-deprived and may be more fatigued at work and that does increase the risk of injury."
The researcher also said that women were at particular risk of workplace injury while working nightshift, very probably because of added tiredness caused by raising families and performing housework, "We found with women the risk of injury was more pronounced with both rotating and regular night shift workers, and for men, the risk was highest among those who worked regular night shifts.
"On average, women spend nine hours more per week on household duties than men. And women's primary household duties include child care, which involves daily activities that require more alertness."
It is almost impossible to imagine that the results of this Canadian study are irrelevant to the UK picture – in all likelihood UK workers face the same occupational and family pressures.
The study also demonstrates just how important it is that the managers of night workers ensure close monitoring for signs of tiredness and mental exhaustion.
Indeed, in some cases, failure to do so may present a personal injury lawyer with strong and justifiable grounds for pursuing compensation on behalf of the affected workers.
