How a football team can claim for personal injury compensation

Professional sportsmen who get badly hurt on the field of play are sometimes able to claim personal injury compensation if their playing career is curtailed due to the reckless actions of another player or the negligence of sports' organisers to ensure all aspects of safety for participants was maintained.

Usually, if a player, say in professional football, is hurt as a result of play, then his club will continue to pay his wages until he returns to full fitness. But, if he is unable to play again, then it may be that a civil action case will be pursued, with the help of a personal injury solicitor, to claim compensation for potential loss of earnings amongst other things.

However, when the actions of another affects a player's ability to compete for their team, it is now likely that a club will try to claim compensation for themselves.

In November 2010, it was reported in the national press that Liverpool FC claimed £500,000 in compensation from the Football Association (FA) after one of their top players, Steven Gerrard, was injured during an international match against France.

It was alleged that when Gerard received the international call-up, the club's management requested that he play only 60 minutes of the game, yet the England manager, Fabio Capello, kept him on the field of play because other players were becoming injured.

Eventually, the midfielder suffered a hamstring injury in the "friendly" match which had the potential to rule him out of competitive play for a month. The club saw this as reasonable justification to make a claim for compensation as it could be argued that the Liverpool Captain's absence would adversely affect the team's performance.

The FA agreed to pay the damages to Liverpool FC, but quickly pointed out that it was able to do so because an insurance policy had been taken out to cover them for potential personal injury to players whilst on international football duty.

They said the insurance scheme had already made payments to other clubs such as Arsenal FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC for injuries sustained in international games by players Theo Walcott and Jermain Defoe respectively.

According to press reports at the time, the English FA were one of only a few national football associations to run such an insurance scheme which compensates clubs if their players are injured playing for their country.
