Thousands of cyclists are killed or hurt in accidents every year on UK roads, leading to the possibility of making a wide range of personal injury compensation claims. Latest annual statistics show more than 16,000 cyclists were involved in accidents - of those, about 150 were fatalities.
These are just the reported figures. ROSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, state that the actual number of bicycle casualties is much higher. It reckons about 60 to 90 per cent are unreported, perhaps totalling some 150,000 each year.
Other research reveals there is strong potential to make cycling accident claims because the odds of dying in a crash on a bicycle are 1 in 71. A pedestrian's risk of dying in a road accident is much slimmer at 1 in 15. The odds of dying in a car smash are 1 in 108, for a light truck crash they are 1 in 75, a heavier truck 1 in 43, and 1 in 26 for a motorbike.
Built-up areas tend to be the locations where most cyclists are involved in accidents. Road junctions are the most common sites with roundabouts being especially dangerous. Four out of five cyclist casualties are male, with about 80 per cent of bicycle deaths and injuries happening in daylight, rising to 90 per cent for children.
About 25 per cent of cyclists killed, and more than 30 per cent of those injured, are children. Child accidents on bikes increase as they grow older until a peak is reached about aged 16. After that time, some teenagers start to use motorised travel.
Research apparently demonstrates that cyclists who do not follow safer road habits are more likely to die or be injured while riding bikes - they seem to be at least partly at fault. They tend to be hit when riding on the pavement and then join a road, perhaps at a junction. Riding in the dark without lights and reflectors leads to accidents, as does riding the wrong way along one-way streets or too close to parked vehicles.
Key safety advice is for cyclists to ride a bicycle as if driving a motor vehicle. Like cars, cyclists need to be more visible, drive defensively, closely observe road conditions and road users and follow the rules of the road.
In addition, risks to bike riders can be reduced by a wide range of protective measures such as traffic calming schemes, cycle lanes and route networks, training for motorists and cyclists, as well as wearing cycle helmets.
