Avoid sustaining a personal injury in the theatre

Hundreds of people attend theatre shows everyday to watch productions performed by actors ranging from amateur dramatics groups to West End professionals. However, theatre-goers do not see what is going on behind the scenes and back-stage staff sometimes have to seek personal injury compensation.

Performances often involve quick costume changes, and multiple props and scenery alterations which have to be dealt with by both actors and members of backstage staff. Additionally, there are usually teams of lighting staff and even orchestras.

Theatre stages are capable of undergoing dramatic changes, for instance transforming from an ice rink to a city road in a matter of hours, and it is up to workers to ensure that the stage is up to the correct safety standards for the next show while working to a deadline.

To prevent a person sustaining a personal injury, staff must all remain alert and aware of what is going on and which task needs to be completed next.

Props and pieces of scenery can be heavy, and if necessary, an employee should always seek the help of another member of staff if an object is too big or too heavy to be moved by one person.

If an item needs to be moved off the stage completely, it should be placed somewhere safe and should not obstruct any walkways. Some staff may not notice an object blocking their way and consequently trip, causing them to sustain harm such as a head injury.

Workers in charge of constructing the stage must always do so carefully and correctly to avoid an accident. If a part of the stage has not been put together properly, such as a hidden trap-door, an actor may seriously injure themselves.

Similarly, if a prop or the scenery is not positioned safely and securely, a heavy object may fall on an employee.

Theatre accidents can be prevented if staff follow proper health and safety regulations and work to ensure that the stage and wings are left in a safe state.
