Here in the UK workers are fortunate to have the protection of the Health and Safety at Work Act as well as various other pieces of legislation and regulation. However, in many other parts of the world, such statutory and regulatory instruments are in short supply, meaning that many are at risk of suffering workplace illness and injury, and often without access to a personal injury claim solicitor.
Jeans workers
In some parts of the world, such as Bangladesh, workers spend long working days treating designer jeans to give them a "distressed" look. Once this has been done the garments then go on sale, usually in wealthy western countries such as Britain.
However, the process used to give the jeans their distressed look actually risks worker health, causing an industrial disease that can have a severe impact on respiratory function. "I have difficulty breathing... When I return from work I feel so tired. My eyes are in pain from all the dust," says one worker.
He adds, "I know the effects this is having on my health, but I continue to do it because I need to feed myself and my family, I am a poor man, so I do this to survive."
It is thought that the damage occurs when workers uses a manual sandblaster to blast the jeans and achieve the worn look so fashionable in many parts of the world.
Silicosis
Medical experts call the disease suffered by jeans workers silicosis. It occurs when tiny particles of silica dust from sand become lodged in the lung tissue.
Symptoms include shortness of breath, weakness, coughing, fatigue and weight loss. There is no cure and in many cases it can be deadly.
Unfortunately, very few jeans manufacture workers who develop silicosis have access to personal protective equipment, medical support, or personal injury claim solicitors.
