Many personal injury claims are made within the few months following the accident which caused the claimant harm, however some injuries only present themselves to the victim many years after.
One such injury is work-related and is likely to only affect individuals who worked in America any time from around 1955 to 1977.
At this time a pesticide called dibromochloropropane (DBCP) was used agriculturally to kill worms, and has since been found to have caused infertility and health problems in the men and women who worked with and around the chemical.
For this reason it is no longer produced and is also illegal to use in farming in the US, but its past usage in the industry is now affecting the people who worked with DBCP when the dangers it presented were largely unknown or ignored by employers.
Many former agricultural workers have made successful claims for the damage which was done to their bodies by the pesticide. For example in 1993, sixteen thousand workers made claims and gained $2,500 (around £1,555) each as a settlement.
Lawyers overseeing the more recent claims ongoing in 2011 believed that their individual clients were likely to be entitled to millions of pounds in compensation, an amount more fitting to the lowered quality of life experienced by many victims.
Some former farm-hands alleged that their employers knew the risk that DBCP posed and that not only had it caused workers to be sterile but others had suffered damage to their corneas, developed skin disorders, and had been left with an increased risk of contracting cancer.
Although this dangerous pesticide was not commercially used in the UK, there is a possibility that some people in Britain will have been exposed to DBCP either through illegal use by their employer or through having previously worked in America before moving to the UK.
Pesticide-related personal injury claim
If you believe that you may have been exposed to dibromochloropropane while working in the agricultural industry in the US or the UK, and are suffering ill health as a result, you should contact your GP or doctor for a diagnosis.
If you have been affected by contact with DBCP, a YouClaim lawyer could help you make a claim against your former employers.
