Many personal injury claims are made after accidents at work, car accidents, medical negligence, or after a faulty product has caused the victim injury.
However, a more unusual type of compensation claim is that made for an incorrectly administered hairdressing treatment.
Simply receiving a haircut that the customer did not like or that did not suit them would not be enough to warrant legal action, unless perhaps they were a model and would lose work as a result.
However, if a client suffered a personal injury during the hair cut or hair treatment, then they could be eligible to claim against the hairdressing salon.
For example, if a careless hairdresser severely cut a customer with their scissors, or the chemicals they used to dye or bleach hair were not used in a safe manner and caused the individual's scalp to become damaged and painful, then they would probably be seen as responsible for the customer's injuries.
One such case was reported in 2011, when a 27-year-old woman sued a hairdressing salon in Nottingham after her hair was left dry and her scalp was burned by chemicals.
When the young lady's hair was bleached it came out ginger in colour, so the hairdresser bleached her hair four more times in order to make it the correct blond colour which had been requested.
The victim stated, "Eleven hours later my scalp was stinging viciously but the pain was nothing compared to the horror I felt when I saw the finished result.
"I felt as if I'd been in a terrible car smash.
"I sought an apology and the salon manager admitted my hairdresser was a trainee and uninsured. But they even tried to pretend my hair looked good."
The neglectful actions of the hair salon caused the victim to become socially withdrawn as she tried to hide her appearance and then spent months growing her hair back after being advised to shave it all off by a follicle specialist.
After contacting a solicitor she managed to receive a £5,250 out-of-court settlement.
