Personal injury claims and the dangers of supermarket doors

At the supermarket, the last thing you want to add to your shopping list is a personal injury claim for an accident you have had while carrying out your weekly food shop.

In March 2010, a British legal firm won a settlement for damages for the estate of an elderly lady who died from injuries sustained from an automatic door at a leading supermarket. The 84-year-old lady, who had existing medical conditions, was seriously injured when the doors malfunctioned and trapped her right leg in the door.

As a result of the laceration she sustained in the supermarket accident, a large blood clot formed in her lower leg which then burst resulting in the elderly woman requiring plastic surgery. Following her personal injury, the lady's health deteriorated significantly and she was unable to walk around easily and was frightened to go out. The scarring from her injury and skin graft left her disfigured which was also said to have distressed her greatly.

Sadly, the elderly lady did not recover from her injuries and died before her compensation claim was settled. However, the deceased's daughter continued the action on her mother's behalf and an out-of-court settlement was made after the supermarket chain admitted liability for the injuries sustained by the elderly woman.

The solicitor representing the family said of the Nottingham based pensioner:

"She suffered terrible injuries from the accident as a result of faulty doors which shut unexpectedly and forcefully, exposing an elderly lady with existing medical conditions to severe pain, suffering and distress."

Medical experts indicated that her age and regular medication with aspirin resulted in a fatal outcome of her injury. It was also noted that her history of chronic chest infections and diabetes made her prone to post operative complications and her treatment for the injury was a major precipitating factor in her death.

If you have suffered a personal injury which was not your fault, you could be eligible for making a compensation claim for your injuries.
