Prevent a personal injury from a slip, trip or fall in the workplace

In a working environment, it is the employer's duty to reduce risks which could cause a slip, trip or fall. For example, in order to connect devices to electricity, long wires and cables are often used which, if left hazardously, could lead someone to make a personal injury claim.

In the vast majority of workplaces, wires are prevalent to keep all sorts of different devices running. If a person does not spot a wire that runs across floor space, they may get their foot caught in the wire and sustain a personal injury such as a sprained wrist or even a broken ankle.

Covering the cables using a mat with fixed-down edges can help to prevent a worker from becoming involved in a work accident.

Items such as boxes and deliveries can similarly pose a risk to people who have not noticed them, especially if they have been left in a place which is usually free of obstructions. Such objects should be cleared away and stored in a safe place.

Under no circumstances should any objects be left so that they are blocking an entire passageway. An employee could sustain an injury by attempting to climb over it and the obstruction could be fatal in an incident of fire.

Flooring should be regularly checked to prevent an employee from coming to any harm. Any raised carpet edges should be firmly stuck down, and any holes in flooring should be filled in.

If a mat outside an entrance doorway becomes slippery in wet and icy weather conditions, the grip should be improved. The mat can be replaced with a more slip-resistant material, or a slip-resistant coating can be applied directly to the mat.

When possible, water should be prevented from entering an entrance area. Doors should not be kept open any longer than necessary in wet weather and thick absorbent entrance mats which dry shoes can prevent water from spreading inside a building and onto potentially slippery floor surfaces.

Heaters or under-floor heating systems can help excess water to dry up quickly and reduce the risk of an employee slipping.
