Head and neck personal injury is too high a price for sporting achievement

(August 2009) US mother of boy left with traumatic brain injury files personal injury lawsuit against American football coach.

Lots of parents in the UK bemoan the fact that young children are discouraged from being too competitive in sport and allege that this highly inclusive "it's not the winning - it's the taking part" attitude is what has caused British sportsmen and women to become so unsuccessful in adult professional sports.

However, in the US one football coach's "win at all costs" attitude was been blamed for several cases of severe personal injury caused during High School American football games and training sessions.

The mother of a boy left with severe brain injuries after suffering a stroke and seizures caused by a burst blood vessel in his brain alleged that the coach supplied her son with a faulty football helmet which did not adequately protect his head and refused to listen when boys complained of injuries.

The coach was also accused of making players perform full contact training drills without protective equipment causing her son to break his collar bone and the other tackler to suffer a broken neck.

The claim for personal injury damages of more than $400,000 (£241,633) was filed against the coach and the local school district for reckless endangerment. Personal injury lawsuit papers said that the defendants' policies were "to place winning over health, safety and welfare of its student athletes".
