Danger of personal injury at music festivals

Festival gigOn July 18th, 2009 one man died and dozens were injured after a music tent collapsed at Pohoda music festival in Slovakia leading to several potential personal injury compensation claims.

Hundreds of people were believed to have been in the marquee when strong winds caused it to collapse. Over 50 people suffered personal injuries in the accident, including three with serious head injuries. After the incident, officials decided to cancel the remainder of the concert which led to traffic jams and long queues as crowds tried to leave the venue.

This case highlights how music festivals, although fun and a great way to see a favourite band perform, can also be potentially dangerous events. The high volumes of people crowded together and the tendency for large amounts of alcohol to be consumed can all lead to accidents. Although the vast majority of festivals go ahead smoothly, without sufficient planning and organisation problems can quickly escalate putting the welfare of the crowds in danger.

Festival organisers have a duty of care towards the crowds that attend their concerts. Thorough risk assessments have to be carried out to plan for every eventuality. Although severe weather such as that experienced at Pohoda music festival is out of organisers' control, measures must be taken to ensure that all marquees and equipment will be able to withstand extreme conditions and if the event is to be cancelled midway through, stringent evacuation plans should be put in place to ensure all festival goers are able to make a safe and swift exit.
