Personal injury advice for petrol station personal injury

At the petrol station, few people are aware of the risks of simply filling up their car as accidents and personal injuries from using the pumps are rare. However, one motorist had to seek personal injury advice after liquid petroleum gas leaked onto his hand at a petrol station in his home town of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan.

The 68-year-old sustained "cold burns", which are similar to frostbite injuries, while at a supermarket fuel station. Due to the severity of the burns, the gentleman required skin grafts and had to take time off of work for several months after the October 2004 accident.

The incident occurred when the Land Rover driver was filling his vehicle with LPG (liquid petroleum gas) when vapour started escaping. When he tried to release the nozzle from his car, the liquid gas squirted over his right arm and hand, causing injuries similar to frostbite.

Despite the supermarket's appeal, the chain was fined £17,000 damages for failing to ensure the petrol nozzle was in good working order. It was also noted by the judge that two similar incidents had occurred at the same petrol station including one where a female motorist suffered vapour cold burns to both hands after LPG leaked over her.

While the court ruled out any mechanical fault with the car which could have caused the incident, it was not determined what the actual cause of the accident was.

Petrol stations have a responsibility to drivers to ensure their safety is protected. Due to the hazardous nature of the materials contained at petrol stations, it is important that stringent safety measures are adhered to and regular safety checks are made.
