Personal injuries - recovery time impeded by alcohol and drugs

The science is clear: not only are heavy drinkers and drug users more likely to sustain personal injuries, they are also more likely to take longer to recover.

Researchers in the US looked at 1.5 million no win, no fee claims in the US, including those that were for car crashes, falls from height and assaults; alarmingly, they found that heavy drinkers had a recovery period twice as long as that of the mean, while for drug users it was even worse, taking three times as long.

One of the researchers comments, "This study provides important evidence regarding the extent of substance abuse disorders and injuries in a population of people who are employed and receive insurance coverage through their employers."

While a spokesperson from Alcohol concern said that she hopes more can be done to tackle the problem. "Consuming alcohol is a major contributing factor to injuries," she said.

Adding, "Research in the UK suggests one in six people attending A&E departments for treatment have alcohol-related injuries or problems, rising to eight out of 10 at peak times."

Another of the researchers said that the study raised some important questions, such as "how many injuries result from the effects of alcohol versus the lifestyle of those who abuse alcohol?"

Interestingly, being drunk or intoxicated at the time of an accident can significantly reduce a claimant's entitlement to 100 percent compensation for their personal injuries. However, compensation may still be payable if the accident can be proven to be the fault of another party.
